What UKAS accreditation guarantees

UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) is the sole national accreditation body appointed by the UK Government to assess testing laboratories against ISO 17025 standards. UKAS accreditation is not optional branding — it is the regulatory benchmark that distinguishes genuine testing laboratories from unaccredited providers.

Our UKAS accreditation Schedule 7933 covers:

• BS 7976-2 / BS EN 16165 — pendulum slip resistance testing (shod and barefoot sliders)
• EN 13036-4 — related surface characteristic testing
• Pendulum test with slider 55 — for wet-barefoot environments such as pool surrounds and shower facilities
• Related laboratory certification standards

The UKAS register is public and searchable at ukas.com. You can verify our accreditation at any time by searching Schedule 7933. No logo, no certificate, and no marketing material can substitute for a direct register check. We encourage every Scottish client to verify independently.

Why accreditation matters for Scottish claims defence

Scottish slip and fall claims — whether in the Sheriff Court or Court of Session — are defended on evidence. A UKAS-accredited BS 7976 / BS EN 16165 test report carries substantially more evidential weight than an unaccredited test, for three reasons:

• Independence is verified — UKAS-accredited laboratories cannot sell the products they test
• Traceability is documented — every measurement is linked to calibrated equipment and qualified engineers
• Annual audit is independent — no self-certification, no conflict of interest

For Scottish pursuers, equally, a UKAS-accredited report supporting a claim is substantially stronger than an unaccredited report. Either side of Scottish slip litigation benefits from UKAS-accredited evidence.

What a non-UKAS report cannot do

Unaccredited "slip tests" — often offered by treatment companies or cleaning contractors — typically cannot establish:

• Equipment was properly calibrated at the time of testing
• The engineer was demonstrably qualified
• Methodology followed BS 7976 / BS EN 16165 rigorously
• The testing company had no commercial interest in a particular outcome
• Results are reproducible under identical conditions

Scottish courts, the HSE, and insurers are increasingly discounting non-UKAS evidence. Insisting on UKAS-accredited testing is the most straightforward way for Scottish businesses to ensure evidence quality.
